Full Text

June 28. A petition has been sent to the French Ministry from the Nantucket people settled at Dunkirk, who are principally Quakers, to be permitted to build a meeting house. It is imagined this will be connived at, if not permitted in positive terms. It is a singular and curious fact, that the island of Nantucket contains 6000 inhabitants, and that nine tenths of these are Quakers. They have belonging to their port 140 vessels, 128 of which are the property of the Quakers.--It is not unworthy of remark, that the Nantucket people, previous to the American disputes, sent all their oil to this country, but now carry it to France, where they meet with every possible encouragement.
