The Senate Calls Back the Indirect Tax Bill-Congress in Brief.
WASHINGTON CITY, Feb. 19.-A message was sent by the senate to the house yesterday requesting the return of the direct tax bill, the purpose being to oblige Vest by giving him an opportunity to tell why he opposed the bill. Palmer offered a concurrent resolution accepting a statue of Lewis Cass from Michigan, and returning thanks therefor. A number of speeches eulogistic of Cass were then made, among the speakers being Palmer, Morrill, Morgan and Hoar, and the resolutions were adopted; after which Coke concluded his four days' speech against the Texas outrage resolutions, and that matter was laid aside. The bill providing for the taking of the eleventh and subsequent censuses was passed. The vote by which the hand vs. steam press matter was postponed indefinitely was on motion of Gorman reconsidered, and the bill placed on the calendar, and then the senate adjourned.
The house, on motion of Hatch, placed the substitute bill for the regulation of the sale of compound lard on the calendar of the committee of the whole and referred it to that committee. The bill for the protection of the fur seal and salmon fisheries of Alaska was recommitted. The Sullivan-Felton contest from the Fifth California district was called up, but the Republicans began filibustering and the house adjourned.
