Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Nantz, dated July 11, 1782, to his friend in this town.
"When I arrived here, the people at that time seemed to be sanguine in their expectations of a peace, and built largely their hopes on the disposition of the new ministry towards that desirable end; but the pleasing prospect seems now to have vanished, and their flattering views have terminated in disappointment. The late departure of Mr. Grenville from Paris, hath put an end to the negotiation.
"This nation seems to derive new vigor from misfortunes. The combined fleet of 30 sail from Cadiz are now off Brest, waiting the junction of 7 ships from that harbour, and 3 from Rochfort; 17 of the Quebec fleet and two frigates have fallen into their hands. The Dutch are triumphant in their own Seas. The naval superiority in this quarter rests decided with our allies."
