OUR BILLS.
We are extremely sorry to have got a letter from one of the preachers saying that his presiding elder had not yet given him the bills for dues in his circuit to the Southern Advocate. We hope this is not generally the case. It was expected, (and surely our wants, made known in Conference, were sufficient to justify the expectation) that presiding elders would not suffer the preachers to depart for their circuits without being furnished with the bills. Perhaps the brother who writes us was not at conference; or left before the final adjournment and meeting of the presiding elders with the preachers of their several districts. But we cannot let the occasion pass without reminding brethren of the importance, nay necessity, of their losing no time in making collections, and remitting money for our paper.
And while on this subject, we must hint again how important it is to the concern for its agents to procure bills which will require the least loss by shaving--that is discount between bills of one suspended bank, and another suspended bank. The Mechanics Bank of Augusta pays specie, and is the best bank in Georgia. The Savannah and Brunswick banks are the best of the suspended banks for our use. Bills of interior banks of Georgia we would rather not get; and, the loss on Alabama and Florida bills is so great, that, bad as we want money, we must request our agents to hold them back for a chance to exchange them for others, rather than send them forward to us at the present rates of shaving them.
