Richmond, Va., Aug. 19.-Claims are made by certain of the Mahoneites that Senator S. H. Newberry, the leader of the four Senators who left Mahone and went over to the Democrats, will support the Republican ticket this fall. It is stated that Senator Newberry's brother-in-law, who is sheriff of Bland County, will be nominated by the Mahoneites for Senator from the district, and that Newberry will support him. The rumor has caused much excitement in political circles. The Democrats claim that Newberry's defection, if it be true, will be offset by the desertion from the Mahone ranks of the county judge of Smyth, which county is in Newberry's Senatorial district. At any rate all this makes the canvass more exciting in the southwest. It is significant that Senator Newberry did not attend the recent Democratic convention in this city. He is the leader of what was known as the big four in the State Senate, and the author of the resolution asking Mahone to resign his seat in the United States Senate.
