The woman listed on police records as Alice Henderson, 35, rear 46 Daniel Street SE, declared Henry Gates, 44, of the same address, beat her severely with a walking cane at the Daniel Street house.
A third woman involved in the melee jumped from a window and fled, according to Patrolmen I. W. Belcher and C. S. Hale. The officers said Gates was accused of beating the woman with the cane after he allegedly caught the woman and his girl friend in a room together. The girl friend is credited with jumping from the window and fleeing.
Officers Hale and Belcher said they answered a call to the corner of Jean and [where?] they picked up Alice Henderson and at her request went to the rear of 46 Daniel Street where they arrested Gates.
The policemen, with their two prisoners, made a trip to Grady Hospital where the woman's wounds were treated. After arriving in the rear of the police station, Officer Belcher escorted his prisoners into the lobby of the police lieutenant's headquarters, while Patrolman Hale parked the police car.
Upon entering the lobby, the woman is alleged to have produced a knife, stabbing Gates in the back of his head. The officers said they searched Gates at the time of his arrest and found him unarmed.
Gates then was returned to Grady where he was treated and dismissed.
The woman was booked at the jail on charges of being drunk, disorderly conduct and fighting.
Turnkey C. W. Cartwright was opening the jail door when stabbing took place.
