NEWTON D. BAKER QUITS ACTIVE WORK IN LOCAL POLITICS

CLEVELAND, April 9. (UP).

Newton D. Baker, former secretary of war, has ended his career of active participation in local politics.

He announced yesterday that he would not seek re-election next month as chairman of the Democratic county central committee, an office he has held for 25 years.

Baker said he was relinquishing the post because "it's high time some younger man came along and took up the reins."

"It's up to us older men to give the young fellows a chance," he said. "But, of course, I will stand by to be available to the party in any advisory capacity and to be of any service that I can."
