Now for Chicago.

The contest for the Presidential nomination is now narrowed down to the Chicago convention. To-day the Maine delegates and the Blaine Club start for the battle-ground. Their hopes of the nomination of Mr. Blaine are high.

The Washington despatch which we have copied from the Tribune presents a fair view of the situation. The real battle for supremacy is yet to come. The claims of Grant's friends that he has a majority of the convention are mere gasconade. The number of votes he will have cannot be decided until it is known who of the contesting delegates will be admitted to seats, and in the deciding of this point the anti-Grant men have a very great advantage.

Mr. Blaine's friends are not disturbed by the result of the Springfield convention. The stolen delegation will be obliged to receive the endorsement of a majority of the States and Territories before it can be admitted to the national convention,—notwithstanding it may be supported by Logan and his followers—and that it cannot receive. The voice of condemnation of the outrage at Springfield is so loud and deep that the committee on credentials will never consent that the Grant delegates forced upon the people of Illinois shall be permitted to take seats to which they are not entitled.
Political.

Senator David Davis has proposed a good platform for the democrats; but have they the timber to build it so that it would hold the old man up if they should put him on it?
