Full Text

The rumor that Mrs. Garfield intends to follow the example of Mrs. Hayes and exclude wine from the White House has created a panic in the diplomatic corps. The foreign gentlemen have with difficulty survived the past four years—the practice of drinking out of a bottle on the front porch in the chilly night air being not at all conducive of health. If the same rule is to prevail for eight years more the diplomats feel that they might as well take their papers at once. In this connection, the statement of A. W. Campbell, of the Wheeling Intelligencer, who is known to be a personal friend of General Garfield, has a powerful interest. He says: "Mrs. Hayes has banished wine from the White House table, and Mrs. Garfield will certainly follow in her footsteps."
