Full Text
There are two colored lunatics in our jail. One has been there for more than a year and the other for several months. Repeated efforts have been made to get them into the Asylum at Weston, but every attempt has failed and the same answer has been returned every time,—"no room." We know not what arrangements are made for colored patients, but we know this County pays as much "Hospital tax" as one-half the transmontane portion of the State and contributes a larger proportion of the money squandered in building the Asylum. It seems that the Eastern portion of the State is only intended as a "fertile field" from which the State Government is to draw all its supplies and to be totally ignored in every other respect. There is a time when patience will cease to be a virtue and Jefferson County will cease to be "a beast of burden" for the rest of the State and her people "hewers of wood and drawers of water" for those people that enjoy all the benefits of her taxes and receive all the rewards—both material and political.
