A battle is shaping up between Birmingham's Police Commissioner Eugene "Bull" Connor and alleged Communists active in the Southern Negro Youth Congress as the organization nears completion of plans for celebrating May Day. May Day in Russia is the equivalent of Independence Day in the United States. A giant demonstration during the Conference's three day meeting had been planned with literature emphasizing the organization's work scheduled to be passed out throughout Birmingham. Police Commissioner Connor has declared no literature would be passed out in Birmingham. The SNYC is expected to defy the Commissioner who they have accused of threatening "to establish thought control." The heated charges and counter charges are based on a three-day Conference of the Southern Negro Youth Congress which is scheduled to be held in Birmingham beginning April 30. This organization has been branded a Communist "front" by Attorney General Tom Clark in a list of Communist organization and Communist front organization issued last December.
