This is the first accident on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad that has resulted in the loss of life to a passenger. We must sincerely trust that such caution will be hereafter observed in crossing the rugged and precipitous defiles of the Alleghanies as to prevent a similar occurrence. Far be it from us to say that the responsibility of the loss of so many lives in this instance rests upon those who were placed in charge of the train. We do not now, nor have we heretofore, expressed an opinion on that subject, or we know the truth cannot be ascertained without the most rigid examination of the hands of the Railroad Company, which we think is imperatively called for by the voice of public opinion. We are the apologists of no one who is neglectful of duty when charged with the solemn responsibility of human life. The interests of the great traveling public are a thousand times more important in our view than the shielding of those who are placed in authority.
