NEW YORK. (Special)-"When the group sent by the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners appears before the Governor of Georgia to ask for a pardon for the nigger communist, Angelo Herndon, we'll be right there with them" said Kenneth Murrell, Commander of the Atlanta American Legion, yesterday.
Mr. Murrell further stated to a representative of the Trans-Radio Press Service which had broadcast news of the delegation that the Legion would lead the fight to prevent a pardon being granted to Herndon, He said. "I have received word that the National Legion will wage a definite fight against Herndon's pardon."
When informed of this statement Alfred H. Hirsch, secretary of the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners, said: "The attempt of Mr. Murrell to scare off the visit of the group is futile, as far as members of our group are concerned.
All of them understand the full significance of the Herndon case; they feel that to sentence a man to 18-20 years on the Georgia chain gang because he helped to lead a peaceful unemployed demonstration is an attack on civil liberties which cannot be ignored no matter in what state it occurs."
Mr. Hirsch added. "The group expects to set out in spite of the idle threats of the leader of the Atlanta Legion. It will make every effort to see Governor Talmadge and expects also to in-
