Bible-Men

The coming election presents an uncommon
question to Bible-men. It is this. Will they
vote for a Bible-man for Congress? Many and
great are the prejudices against elevating Bible-men
to office, and in some States they are forbidden
to hold office, so far as ministers of the
Gospel are concerned, by the constitution! But
there are those among us, some religious, and
some not religious, who believe that the offices
of the country would be best administered by
Bible-men, and that Bible-men, other things being
equal, should always have the preference.
Let all such vote for Mr. Winans. He is a
Bible-man of long standing. A well tried
Bible-man. A Bible-man both in theory and
practice. A Bible-man both at home and
abroad. I do not know him, have never seen
him, do not belong, and never can belong to
his denomination, and do not fully agree with
him in politics; but I shall be glad to vote for
him, and to show the country that Mississippi
is capable of sending up to represent her, in
part, in the great council of the nation, a true
Bible-man. Such a man may be trusted there.
He may be expected to keep himself clear from
the wicked contaminations of the capital, which
lead so many astray, and to represent us, and
the whole country, on the side of honor and
honesty, in the fear of God, and in accordance
with the great principles of Gospel Truth! Let
Bible-men then come forward to the support of
a Bible-man. Let denominational and political
prejudice give way to the cause of truth, and
the success of a Bible-man. Let all those who
respect the Bible and Bible-men, act in accordance
with the dictates of their consciences in
this matter. Let us unite in elevating Bible-men
to the first offices in our country, and let
us then see whether Bible influences will not
reform evil practices, and prove conducive to
the prosperity and happiness, the peace and glory of
OUR COUNTRY.
