The following stratagem is said to have been played off by Bonaparte preparatory to his leaving Moscow.

As salt was scarce in the country round, He caused it to be made enable. tha Moscou the peasantry might come to Moscow, and be there provided preserving their meat through t with as much as they required for winter, at the rate of 8 copteks per pood. The proposals tempted some upwards of 700 carts were assembled at Moscow, for the purpose of bringing away salt. The consequence was, that drivers, horses, and carts were all put in requisition for the service of the army, and employed in removing stores and baggage.
