FOR THE GAZETTE.

Mr. Jones--

A writer who signs himself "Republican," in your Gazette of the 2d inst. has stated that Kent county had devised an unexceptionable plan for the election of their committee of conference, to meet New Castle and Sussex counties, for selecting a candidate for governor and representative to congress, and suggests the necessity to devise some measure to collect the sense of this county with regard to the removal of the seat of justice, and adds, it is left over for us to make a free choice of our assemblymen."

He further states that if such are sent forward who approve the measure, it will be enacted into a law. Will those two subjects harmonize the republican citizens of New Castle county as to the mode which the citizens of Kent county have adopted, and which the writer has no doubt seen? I cannot say whether that plan is unexceptionable or not. But as to the mode he proposes, at the same time that a meeting is to be held in New Castle county, in order to select a governor, and a representative to congress, a discussion relative to the seat of justice, or to devise some means to collect the sense of this county on a removal of the seat of justice, would have a tendency to defeat the intentions of the republicans of the state in their governor and representative to congress. The measures taken for the purpose of influencing the minds of the citizens of the county during the last year, and the exertions made to procure signatures to memorials on that subject for the removal of the seat of justice, are yet resolved--a list of those who were advocates of the measure, with the amount of the taxable property in the county, would satisfy any person that it was not approved of by a majority of those who would have to pay the expense. If the writer be a republican he has not chosen subjects that will admit of discussion, at the same time without endangering the republican cause. A more certain plan could not be devised to give the federalists the choice of a governor and congressional representative. The republicans of the state have had experience heretofore on the subject of agitating local questions. The republicans of Kent and Sussex have felt the effects of the divisions and dissention in New Castle county about local affairs--their exertions have been paralyzed; and what are they to expect for the present year should the recommendation of a "Republican" be adopted.

Main Argument

discussing the removal of the seat of justice alongside selecting a governor and congressional representative would divide republican citizens of new castle county and defeat state republican goals by benefiting federalists, as past local agitations have paralyzed efforts in kent and sussex counties.
