MEANY WILL SPEAK AT JOB SAFETY MEETING
A major address by George Meany, president of the AFL-CIO, will highlight labor's extensive participation in the President's Conference on Occupational Safety in Washington March 25-27.
President Meany's closing day speech on March 27 will be one of three major addresses by non-Government leaders. Ralph Cordiner, president of the General Electric Co., will speak the first afternoon, and Benjamin Fairless, President of the American Iron and Steel Institute, will share the platform with Mr. Meany at the concluding session, which will summarize the accomplishments of the conference. The theme will be "Safety Conserves Manpower... Manpower Builds the Future."
(A conference panel on the opening day will feature Jerome Pollack, social security consultant to the United Auto Workers, a veteran of earlier sessions. He will discuss "Safety Progress and Problems of the Labor Movement.")
The major work of the conference will be carried out on the second day, March 26, in separate "workshops" on various aspects of safety, with men from the labor movement prominent in most of them, either as panelists or consultants.
P. L. Siemiller, vice president of the International Association of Machinists, will discuss "Cooperation and Participation" on a workshop panel considering "Expanding Safety Activities Through Organizations."
C. F. MacGowan, president emeritus of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, will present labor's viewpoint on a key panel discussing the impact of nuclear energy in the field of occupational safety.
Neil C. Sherbourne, Secretary-Treasurer, Minnesota AFL-CIO Federation of Labor, will set forth "What Labor Expects in State Safety Services" in a workshop that will explore "How Can the States Promote Safety?"
As in all previous conference planning, labor is well represented on the Technical Advisory Committee for the 1958 session. Labor members include Richard Walsh, chairman, AFL-CIO Committee on Safety and Health; Clinton M. Fair, AFL-CIO; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers; and
