Full Text

On Col. Bradstreet's Success.

ENVY, detraction, seek your dark retreat;

There gnaw your chains, there curse the brave and great.

But know, heroic Bradstreet's name shall shine,

Through all the annals of succeeding time.

May Heav'n some great illustrious bard inspire,

With genius equal, and with equal fire;

O chief! to sound abroad your conqu'ring fame,

And in his works immortalize your name.

Till then, permit a bard but young in song,

To aid your triumphs as they roll along:

Foremost in war, in honour may you stand,

And e'er be deem'd the patriot of our land.

Long may you grace new Albion's rising state;

Lead forth her Sons, instruct them to be great;

By th' instructed heroes shall they stand

With glory fir'd, to save their native land.
