VERSES wrote immediately on reading the EXTRA-ORDINARY GAZETTE, of the taking the HAVANNA.
Mens solutus ambulo.
Now to my arms, submits the pride of Spain;
Look up, ye wise, and hail my fav'rite reign,
Britannia cries (as pointing to the throne)
She saw new laurels grace her much lov'd son.
Let dark Division cease her impious roar,
And blue lip'd Envy groan despair no more;
Born in the North, or South, where'er he dwells,
That man is mine, in Virtue who excels:
And one sole wish inflames your Sovereign's breast:
O gracious heav'n, be my Britannia bleft!
Nor doth he vainly wish: Rejoic'd I see
Fair Peace approach, led on by Victory:
Bright in her train, with Justice Fame appears,
And tells of honours form'd for latest years.
O greet the welcome band: As great in war
Be yours till nobler, to protect and spare.
Then the firm Hero, who hath fought so well,
At ease his dangers shall to Delia tell;
While the fond nymph, with rich reward of charms,
Shall clasp the Hero closer in her arms.
Rais'd to new strength, beneath the smiles of Peace,
Each art more elegant my realms shall grace;
And spread their glories to the farthest shore
That late hath trembled at my thunder's roar.
Commerce shall stretch her thousand wings more wide,
And bring in treasures on each flowing tide;
And sure as gratitude asserts her claim,
Shall pure Religion trim her hallow'd flame;
Sweet poesy in nobler notes shall sing
The favour'd Country and the Patriot King.
EUGENIO.
