SAN FRANCISCO, April 13. (UP) The office of price administration has filed a criminal information in federal district court charging William and Paul Giovannoni, onion and potato wholesalers, with exceeding OPA ceiling prices on onions.
Valentine Hammack, assistant U. S. district attorney, said the Giovannonis were charged on seven counts in connection with the sale of 700 pounds of boiler onions at 10 1/2 cents a pound, nearly 4 cents a pound more than the ceiling price.
The charge was filed, an OPA spokesman said, because any laxity in enforcement of ceilings might result in skyrocketing prices on onions, which have become increasingly scarce.
The Giovannonis are the largest distributors of onions in the San Francisco bay area.
