Full Text

In the British House of Lords, the Earl of Ellenborough has found an opportunity of throwing down the gauntlet, in regard to his East India policy, though, in justice to his enemies, it must be admitted that they have shown no special desire to pick it up. His lordship is a formidable debater, and his opponents are content with their recent success, as evinced by his recall, and not anxious to encounter him in debate upon the merits of the question. His lordship took occasion to observe that Lord Campbell's bill for the abolition of deodands was "unnecessarily verbose;" whereupon Lord C. suggested that such a fault should be cautiously alluded to by one who was at least the reputed author of certain Indian proclamations, not remarkable for either brevity, or a strict adherence to their proper subject matter. To this Lord Ellenborough indignantly retorted, that he was prepared to defend his Indian policy against the accusations of Lord C. or any other man; and he wished what had been said behind his back might be repeated to his face. Lord Campbell deprecated the Earl's wrath, alleging that he meant nothing offensive, no reflection on official conduct; and the Earl replied, quoted Lord Chatham, and told the noble and learned lord "that the next time he meant nothing he had better say nothing."
