Full Text

The much talked-of race between the steamers Della Collins and Jessie B. took place the 21st inst., both boats leaving Gardiner at about the same time, and immediately orders were given to make all steam possible, for the race was expected to be a hot one and to make a record of fast time. The boats proceeded up the river, first one taking the lead and then the other. Side by side they flew through the narrow channel and the passengers and crews were nearly wild with excitement. Finally as they approached the narrow channel known as the "lower dug out" the Della gave a few wild snorts and a flirt of her stern wheel and left the Jessie B. far astern. It is a well known fact that the Della is afraid of the cars, and as there was a train approaching at the time she made her winning spurt, it is supposed she must have been frightened. Both captains claim the race.
