ON FRIENDSHIP

The choicest, noblest blessing life can bring
The greatest bliss which mankind can enjoy,
FRIENDSHIP we call the pure spontaneous spring
No lapse of time or absence can destroy.

Exalted principle! She rules the soul!
Is the fair ornament of human kind;
Reigning triumphantly from pole to pole,
All glorious on her splendid throne, the mind!

When art and science nay when nature dies,
When sun and planets each shall veil his head,
Friendship, triumphing, shall assume the skies,
And shine when all their fading pomp is fled!

Vice, aw'd by her, amidst the blaze of pow'er,
Asham'd, the purity of Virtue owns,
And modest merit in a gloomy hour
Feels a sweet comfort, not the gift of thrones.
