The Repudiators have held their Convention in this County, and have presented their ticket for the Legislature, to the people. The ticket is probably as good a one as any they could make out. The candidates are strong party men and are real Repudiators.
There is no doubt but that they will carry the entire strength of the Anti Bondmen. We hope that no bond payer will suffer himself to be deluded into the support of any of them by their professions of an anxiety to have the bonds paid, or by any propositions about introducing a bill for the assumption of the State debt. The Union Bank bonds constitute a debt, which the State is bound to pay either by the force of its legal or moral obligation. If which an arbitration exist there is no denying that in justice and honesty it ought to be met. But if there is no such obligation upon the State there is no reason why Mississippi should voluntarily assume such a load of debt. Nothing is more ridiculous than the grounds, which some persons attempt to occupy in regard to assumption. They wish to avoid repudiation, are unwilling to acknowledge the obligation, but are in favor of the assumption of the debts of the State!! Instead of being satisfied with such a compromise, we hope the bond payers will fall upon some plan to concentrate their entire strength upon suitable individuals, who are unqualified in their opposition to Repudiation, and are determined to go for the payment of such debts only, as they admit that the state is under an obligation to discharge. It has been suggested to me that the following method would be most likely to effect this object and satisfy the entire bond paying party. Let meetings of bond payers, without regard to general politics, be immediately held in every Police District, and let them proceed to elect by ballot such individuals, as they would be satisfied should represent their wishes in a meeting of these delegates from every portion of the county. When these delegates thus elected have met, they would come as near as possible embodying the wishes of a majority of their party, and their selection of candidates for the legislature would probably give general satisfaction. For convenience in regard to the election of the delegates and for despatch in their proceedings, it perhaps would be well to limit the number to six. We most sincerely hope that the bond payers will take these hints and proceed immediately to act upon them.
