County Nurse and County Physician Working-Mental Examiner Here.
A number of meetings have been held lately in different parts of Itasca county by Dr. Jules Gendron, county physician, and Miss Elizabeth Hanson, county health nurse. These meetings are held to stimulate interest in child hygiene work, and to inform the people of the different communities of how they may help themselves to better health.
Statistics show that there were 235 deaths in Itasca county last year, and that of this number 64 were infants less than one year of age. Only three deaths were assigned to old age as the cause, and thus only three are what is called in health work circles legitimate deaths. It is to overcome the large amount of infant mortality that the meetings by the county health authorities have been held.
Since the meetings have been held, there have been 52 women of this county enrolled in correspondence courses at the University of Minnesota. This course covers directions as to care of children and maternity care.
Miss Agnes Crowley, mental examiner for the state, was in Itasca county last Thursday and Friday, and with Miss Hanson visited 12 mental cases in different parts of the county. She advised regarding treatment in some of the cases, and recommended institutional treatment where the occasion warranted.
Miss Hanson, county nurse, has examined the children in many of the rural schools, and will continue this work as long as weather permits driving. This week she is out in the northwestern part of the county, and will examine many children in the homes and the rural schools.
