INTENSE INTEREST SHOWN IN ELECTIONS
Indianapolis, March 15, 1926.--The flood of declarations of candidacy already received at the office of the Secretary of State for local state nominations discloses an intense interest in the fall election. That Republicans in the various communities feel confident of victory is indicated by the greater number of G. O. P. candidates.
The period for filing declarations of candidacy for local nominations will not close until April 3. All candidates for Congress, local judges, prosecutors, and state senators and representatives are required to file their declarations with the Secretary of State.
Frederick E. Shortemeier, Secretary of State, expects more than 2,000 names on the records of candidates for local state and national offices by April 3. Because of the accuracy demanded in handling all these declarations of candidacy he has appointed a special clerk in charge of the filing.
Active organization work which has been carried on by the Republican state and district organizations during the last year is believed to have been an influence in stimulating interest in campaigns for legislative, congressional and local offices. Repeated appeals have been made by Clyde A. Walb, Republican State Chairman, to the party leaders in each county to encourage strong candidates to seek office. Particular attention is being paid to the township offices as most of them are now held by Democratic officials elected in 1922
