Full Text

For the Spirit of the Age.

To R.J. L.

To dearest "Jennie," I must write
A verse or two in season;
I hope she will forgive a sprite.
And not cry treason, treason.

Maid of beauty, in whose eye,
Dwell founts of never failing love,
I cannot think without a sigh—
Of days recorded oft above.

Maid of beauty in whose air,
A thousand graces hover;
Kindly fairies! can a girl so fair
Live long without a lover?

So beautiful in form and face,
Perfect in every gentle grace,
Your high inheritance, God's love—
May angels guard you from above.
