Full Text
The fate of Nehemiah R. Knight, is another warning to that class of apostates, denominated Twaddlers who desert their party and principles, but cling to the name which honored them in their purer and better days. After having filled various stations of responsibility and trust, Gov. Knight went over to the enemy for office, and the latter part of his life has proved him to be a mere politician for place. Gov. Foot, who has been Knight's associate, had his own fate sealed previous to the Rhode-Island Twaddler. These men would find some palliation for their conduct, did they possess either honesty or candor. Were they frankly to avow that they had abandoned their former principles—that they preferred federalism to democracy, and were for a different policy than that which had raised them from obscurity, we might regret their alienation; but their shuffling and twaddling propensities, and their sickenning professions that they are democrats, although they have discarded every principle and sentiment of democracy, only renders them despicable. What man, of any party, respects such drivelers as those canting recreants who for years have so successfully played the hypocrite throughout New England.
