WASHINGTON, July 1. The Weekly Dispatch, "printed and published at Wine Office court, Fleet street, E. C. London," gives the following item of news which is quite "fresh:" Mrs. Cleveland being young, is ambitious, and she seems to make her husband's reign over the republic of the West famous by introducing several novelties into her code of etiquette. She does not, it seems, remove her gloves at dinner, and this custom must in future be rigidly observed by those who dine in-state with President Cleveland. If the rule is to apply to men as well as to women, it will add new terror to the presidential dinners: and the friends of Sam Ward the prince of transatlantic gourmets, will rejoice that he was permitted to die in peace before he was put to the torture of eating a state dinner with his gloves on. The ladies of Washington must have ugly hands, otherwise they would rebel against a ukase of the presidentess which compels them to conceal them. When Mr. Cleveland's sister presided at the white house she forbade ladies to appear at table in low necked dresses. A presidentess who would dine in her gloves would, if she were a queen, go to bed in her crown. This is a sample of the news of this country published at London. It is false. There is no foundation for the statement made as to gloves, hence no excuse for the comment upon the handsome hands of the women of Washington.
