The Ice King Turns Up His Toes
to the Daisies At Last.
The Skating Rink has ended its extra-
ordinary career of usefulness and mirth.
We expect no more miracles; and we pro-
ceed, now, to bury the Ice King, without
hope of immediate resurrection. Last
night he had lived just four months. He
got a good send off then with music and
the mirth of a pay-expenses crowd, and
we propose to talk about him now as gone
forever. We are proxy for the many, and
shed the many's tears. We mourn not for
the managers, who have had an ample
Providence on their side, and who have
realized substantial consolation out of the
funny business. We sigh for the young
and spoony, who have enjoyed the realm
of our deceased friend as a rendezvous,
where they have captured one another, if
not the spectators, by the figures they have
made (of themselves) on the ice; where
their hearts have warmed as though beat-
ing under a tropic sun. Their opportunity
is gone for the time. They will find an-
other, though, for no fortification has yet
been devised stout enough to keep the
young and lusty apart. And as the Spring
has set in they will not be long about it.
The gate, the doorstoop, the porch, the
fence and the graveyard will soon take
the place of the rink. What are the ol-
derly dames, the veritable ice-fairies, going
to do about it? Where can they show
their agility hereafter? Never mind; they
too will soon be consolable again. With
the Spring opening they will not take to
outdoor exhilaration as generally as the
younger folk. They will resume the full
exercise of a member that has been
not paralyzed but temporarily neglected
during the reign of the ice king. They
will pass without violence from the devel-
ipment of the limbs and get back to the
normal use
of the tongue.
Hen
parties are
beginning to be the
rage already,
At these little pic-
nics of the dames the female thirst for
information will be quenched. They will
have knowledge of importance about their
neighbors, and without unnecessary delay
their neighbors will hear all about them-
themselves. This will make it so pleasant all
around that the skating rink and its dis-
tractions will soon pass out of mind. And
they never grow tired of the dainty morsels
they digest at these entertainments.
Our sympathies are mostly with the
older males who have frequented the rink.
What are they going to do with them-
themselves? Many of them will be driven to
playing Pedro. They will then lose all
their friends, become confirmed kickers,
and before the next skating season get so
worn with being cinched that they will
prefer to die.
The Ice King is not responsible
for any of these things, however,
and we hope that when he reaches
his Summer home in the clouds he
will look down upon the young and
elderly of both sexes from a rainbow and
encourage them with smiles to go it while
they can. May the Ice King, dead only for
a season, come to us again next Winter
glorious after resurrection. Farewell!
