THE PLEASANT PRETZEL.

We thought that the pretzel was obsolete.
Instead we find that the quantity used is
gaining. The department of commerce says
that its figures will show the consumption of
about 35,000,000 pounds this year-an increase
of eight million pounds over the year before.

The simple, curled up pretzel was once in
partnership with the foaming glass of beer.
But the partnership was broken up. Evidently
the pretzel has sustaining virtues which mean
that it will always be a necessity.

Most people like pretzels, with or without
the beer. They are interesting and pretty, too.
We are glad to see that they will be with us in
increasing numbers.
