For a week or so we have heard nothing of the progress of the movement to organize a Democratic Club in this city. We trust that the proper energy will be shown in this matter. We should also have branch clubs all through the county. There is no royal road to political success. It lies largely in attention to details. Discipline and organization are the only means by which strength can be shown at the polls. For the last two elections—those for delegates to the Constitutional Convention and for a member of the Board of Supervisors—we suffered everything to go by default in the city. In the Supervisorial election the country Democracy came up in fine style, and Mr. Hannon was elected, though he had an opponent in the Democratic ranks. In the city not one-third of the total vote was polled, and certainly not a fifth of the Democratic vote. This will never do. No effort should be relaxed until a Democratic Club is organized in the city numbering at least three hundred members. The next business should be to secure a hall and have at least monthly meetings, which should be addressed by leading Democrats. Of one thing we are assured, every good Democrat should take a pride in seeing that his party holds its own. To trail our banner just as we are about to attain the goal after a struggle of nearly twenty years would be a most lame and impotent conclusion of a splendid record. Let Democrats be up and doing!
