Disinterested Democracy
-The following from the New-England Republican is republished by way of a remembrancer.

In 1799, a law was passed, augmenting the salaries on account of the additional labour required to be performed in the several offices. This law was to continue in force for three years and no longer. It expired in 1802, and the salaries were then reduced to their former rates, as they exhibited in the left hand column below. But in March, 1802, when, it will be recollected, the government was in the hands of our good friends, the democrats, a law was passed, by which the salaries were again raised to the war price, though the cause for which they were first augmented had then ceased to exist. By this law the salaries were raised to the rates as exhibited in the column at the right hand.

Thus it appears, that instead of reducing those salaries they have added to them from four hundred to fifteen hundred dollars each. Why were these same salaries too high for the Federalists and too low for our Democrats; who are known to be such dear friends of the people, and who are obstinately opposed to taking the people's money.
