DURHAM, N. C. - Four young NAACP and CORE members remained in jail here rather than pay $25 fines on trespass charges in connection with an attempt to desegregate a Howard Johnson restaurant on a highway near here.
The group included Miss Joyce D. McKissick, 19-year-old daughter of Floyd B. McKissick, NAACP attorney who is representing the group; Miss Guytanna Marie Horton, 20; the Rev. Waldo B. Mean, white Duke University student; and Jon Kern Schaeffer, also.
They were arrested on Aug. 5 following a sit-in in the restaurant. The four refused to pay the fines imposed on them by Judge A. R. Wilson in Recorder's Court, Aug. 6. They also refused to post the appeal bond set at $200 each. They face a maximum 30-day sentence.
Miss Horton, an officer of the NAACP youth council, said that the demonstrations will "most definitely" continue.
