CAPE PRINCE OF WALES
For a stay of six or seven months at Wales, on Cape Prince of Wales, Bering Sea, the Rev. John E. Youel left by plane last week. He took the place of Mrs. Ema M. Stauffen, Presbyterian missionary there the past six years.
Mrs. Stauffen left Wales and passed through Nome enroute to the States on a furlough, last week. She plans to return to Wales next July or August on the steamship that takes annual supplies there from Seattle.
"I shall be busy at Wales," Rev. Youel said. "Besides my church and Sunday school work, I'll keep house for myself. The manse at Wales is a very comfortable building.
"Besides Mrs. Stauffen, there are two other white persons at Wales. They are Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Crutcher, teachers in the school maintained by the Office of Indian Affairs. Mr. Crutcher is an amateur radio operator.
"Having been at Wales on previous occasions I am familiar with conditions.
"After Mrs. Stauffen returns to Wales, I shall visit St. Lawrence Island.
"There are two communities on the island - Savoonga and Gambell. The island's total population is about 550.
"After my brief stay on St. Lawrence Island I shall go back to Fairbanks. I expect to be there only a little while before leaving on a trip to the States. At Council Bluffs, Iowa, I shall meet Mrs. Youel and together we shall go to New York City. In New York, I shall report to the Board of Presbyterian Missions and confer with its officials.
"Mrs. Youel was a passenger on a recent southbound train from Fairbanks. She is going to Council Bluffs to visit relatives."
