The Three Inmates of Apex Tunnel Died by Suffocation
Apex Colo., March 6—Three men were imprisoned by flames in the Molepole tunnel today, and perished from suffocation. The dead are:
Con McNerney.
A. T. Bellows.
W. H. Coltrin.
The Molepole tunnel is a short distance below this place on the east side of Pine creek. At the tunnel entrance there is a small building which caught fire about 12 o'clock through a stove in the building. The flames spread to a snow shed in the front of the tunnel which shut off the circulation of air as it passes into the tunnel which is over 700 feet in length.
As soon as it became known here a large rescuing party was formed. After working long and hard the rescue party effected an entrance into the tunnel and the bodies of the three men were found.
Coltrin was found with his face downward. McNerney was found with his back leaning against the side of the tunnel. Bellows was found in a cross cut.
This cross-cut is about 550 feet in length and Bellows' body lay about twenty feet from the entrance.
