Full Text
In the Senate in Sacramento, Lewis called attention to the correspondence in the San Francisco Chronicle reflecting on himself and Laine and moved the expulsion of the reporter from the floor of the Senate. Gibbons offered an amendment that in future no reporter from that paper be allowed on the floor of the Senate, which was accepted by Lewis, and on motion was carried by a viva voce vote, there being but few faint noes in opposition. The reporter was accordingly conducted outside the bar by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
We know nothing of the nature of the strictures in the Chronicle, but judging from its usually severe criticism, take it for granted that the Senate did the right thing. In the eagerness of that paper to outstrip all others, regardless of facts, it not infrequently goes outside the bounds of propriety. Information is of little value when not strictly reliable, and in this branch the Chronicle excels.
