A company for the construction of a Railroad passing through the northern portion of Arkansas, east and west, has been organized at Fayetteville, under the provisions of our general incorporation Act, and earnest efforts are being made to secure the requisite amount of stock. The people of the northwest are taking a deep interest in this enterprise, and going to work in the right way to secure success. We admire their pluck and determination to rely upon their own resources in building this road, and cordially commend the enterprise to the most favorable consideration of the people of North Arkansas.
The following letter from Mr. Fick of Carroll county, published in the Mountain Echo of the 21st, shows the feeling existing among the people in favor of this projected enterprise:
"In my late canvass throughout this district, I was particular in advocating the Railroad interest of our section of the State, as one of the most important issues; showing the necessity of vigorous action now, in the matter; both in Congress, in the Legislature, and at home. I urged the necessity of forming a company, at once, and of taking measures to secure both Congressional and State aid this winter. I believe that in every instance where I spoke I created a good impression, and had I been elected should have used every effort to advance the interest of our Road in the Legislature; as it is, I assure you that I am heart and hand and purse with you, and it gives me pleasure to see that the North west has men of enterprise sufficient to begin, and I hope, to complete a work which will go far towards redeeming our State from the stigma of inaction that so long has been her curse.
I regret that I am not able to be with you at your next meeting, but let me assure you that anything that I can do in the matter shall not be neglected.
I would suggest that a corps of canvassers be at once selected and organized along the whole line of the Road. Volunteer speakers can be had in every County, who should advocate the plans and prospects, thoroughly, before the people. Men of influence should be induced to hold meetings and preach Rail Road to the people upon all suitable occasions.
I have consulted the leading men here and they're all willing to work, so that while you are laboring at Washington others should be at Little Rock and at home urging the enterprise ahead.
I shall be in Little Rock about the first week in January and if I can do anything then, write me and I will do so.
Send me a few more of your printed arguments, for distribution. Those you did send me are doing a good work.
Please answer this at once, and believe me,
Ever Yours,
H. W. FICK."
On this subject the Echo remarks:
"Let the good work go on, but do not let Washington county be in the rear. Captain Fick's suggestions are admirable and we presume the Board of Directors will adopt them.
Let this matter be pushed forward with all speed. With a Railroad in process of construction, Northwestern Arkansas will attract the attention of the floating population of America, and the old World as well, and by her mild winters, and genial summers, salubrious atmosphere, her pure waters, her natural fitness for growing fruit of every description, and her agricultural qualities, together with her many other superior natural resources, will induce thousands to settle in our midst bringing with them the hum and buzz of machinery and industry.
In regard to this Railroad we would urge our readers to adopt Grant's order as their motto: 'PUSH THINGS'"
