GIVE GREAT SHOW
FOR ROCK ISLAND
Forbes, McCoy, Wallace
In Workout for
Crowd.
Frank Foster's free boxing show
was an outstanding success last
night at the Rock Island Employes
club and gave reason to believe that
the ascending wave of enthusiasm
for the Forbes-McCoy bout will put
the Labor Day carnival over in
great style Monday night at the
Coliseum.
Although it was only a training
work-out, 250 railroad men saw some
solid socking between Harry Forbes
and Young Wallace, Southern wel-
terweight champion, who boxed
three rounds. Forbes exchanged
mitts with Jack Rainey, preliminary
man, in two stanzas, and went two
more with Young McQuiston, lively
son of a Rock Island operative of-
ficer.
Johnny McCoy, who arrived on
the evening train from Shreveport
with half a dozen fighters bound
for the Coliseum, scarcely had time
to change his fight togs before be-
ing announced at the railroad club-
house. He contented himself with
two fast rounds of shadow-boxing
and rope-skipping, showing some of
that stuff that has illuminated a
long and successful career for the
Cleveland Skeeter.
It was learned last night that
Foster had signed up Kid Carlin,
New Orleans flash, for a bout with
the winner between Forbes and
McCoy, which puts the Monday
night bout in a position of great in-
terest. Whether Forbes, with his
youth and stalwart style of battle,
will be able to turn the trick earlier
than he did at Shreveport and cop
the decision by two rounds instead
of losing it by that margin, will
be something that only the shifting
fortunes of the ring can determine.
When Forbes steps into the ring
for the second time within six days
he will meet a man of reputation.
Johnny McCoy conquered Harold
Smith, the man who beat Joe Bur-
man, perhaps the uncrowned king
of the bantams, fought Pal Moore
to a draw, beat Kid Pancho three
times, won two referee's decisions
over Tim O'Dowd, and scalped Al
Corbett, Pete Zivic, Frankie Ma-
son (Canadian champion), Claude
Wilson (twice, Southern bantam
champion), and Pascal Colletti. He
also fought Phil O'Dowd and Con-
nie Curry in no-decision bouts.
Foster has remodeled the Coliseum
fit for the fistic furor which will
be let loose there this afternoon, Sun-
day, and up to the eve of the 28-
round carnival Monday. Forbes and
McCoy will go eight, and there will
be five 4-rounders, with a neg-
ro preliminary and battle royal.
