Full Text

Extract of a Letter from Warsaw, Nov. 17.

The King seems to abhor all excess in luxury; of which the following instance is a proof. Wanting to give his Shoemaker some directions, his Majesty ordered him to be sent for, and was soon after extremely surprised to see enter his apartment, in order to take measure of him a man dressed in embroidered velvet. He was, it is true, the Court Shoemaker; but his Majesty dismissed him, without permitting him to exercise in that sumptuous habit the noble and brilliant functions of his office, saying at the same time, (seemingly in good humour however) "What cloaths must I wear, if people of your profession dress in this manner?"
