A Drunken Country.

Denmark is the most drunken country in the world. She consumes per capita more than double the amount of spirits of either Germany or Switzerland, and almost double that of the heaviest drinker, viz., Holland. Denmark drinks 4.99 gallons of distilled liquor, .26 gallons of wine, 8.50 gallons of beer per capita annually. Statistics show that from 1871 to 1888, 20 per cent of the divorces were caused by drink; that, among the insane, 19 per cent of the men and 4 per cent of the women were unbalanced by drink, and that three-fourths of the arrests and one-third of the pauperism were due to drink.
