Two From County Are Graduated At Ohio University
Two students from Madison County were included among the 900 awarded diplomas and degrees at the annual Ohio University commencement exercises Sunday afternoon, June 11, on the College Green under the historic McGuffey Elms at Athens.
They were: John Emrich, Jr., and Roderick Galbreath Wittich, Mt. Sterling: Bachelor of Science Degrees In Commerce.
The class was the largest one ever to be graduated in the 146-year history of the university. Added to those graduated in February and those to be graduated at the close of the summer session in August, degrees will be granted to nearly 1,200 students during the 1949-50 term.
Seventy-five of Ohio's 88 counties along with 17 other states and seven foreign lands were represented in the list of graduates, which included 27 awarded Associate in Arts degrees as the first to finish the recently-adopted two-year terminal program.
Cuyahoga county headed the Ohio list with 174 graduates, with Athens having 79, Scioto 35 and Stark 34. New York led the other states with 17, Pennsylvania was a close second with 16, followed by West Virginia with 14 and New Jersey 9.
The graduates were addressed on the subject "Think For Yourself" by Robert A. Taft, senior U. S. senator for Ohio. At the morning baccalaureate services, they heard a talk on "It Is Earlier Than You Think" by Dr. D. Elton Trueblood, professor of philosophy at Earlham College, Richmond, Ind.
