Full Text

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in this town, to his friend at New York, (taken from a New York paper, of the 23d instant. )

I cannot bid you adieu without mentioning the very forward disposition of that old disaffected clan, who were opposed to the late revolution wherever they are distributed in the country, in particular, those of them who are rich land proprietors labour with all their might to poison the minds of those around them, with. I ever told you that we should be crushed with taxes, &c, causing such an opposition to the necessary requisition of government that the consequences are feared. For my part I am not a little surprised that so little. pains is taken to silence this infernal ignorant brood ; for, that they are bounden by a continual link, and aim at internal feuds throughout the states, backed by lurking, British emissaries, is certain ; and this will inevitably be effected if something be not done to prevent it.

" The burden of taxes is an unavoidable evil, and has been greatly opposed in different counties, which reminds me of a generally accepted maxim, that " no tax can be levied that will give universal content."-- Human nature is so susceptible of the impressions of self-interests, that every man is anxious to push from himself all manner of share in the public burthens, and to throw them altogether upon the shoulders of his neighbours.

" Not long since I was in the company of one of the most forward of these men. who, not knowing my sentiments. expatiated freely upon this topic, declaring, that his real wish and desire was to see the country rise to oppose the tax gatherers, that the collectors dare not demand, officially, the tax of any farmer in his vicinity, and that in case they did so he would head a mob to oppose them,--This in Massachusetts commonwealth, surpasses all credulity."
