Full Text

The Providence Advocate attempts to discredit the evidence of persons who say that they have procured liquor without difficulty at the hotels in Maine, under the Maine Law, by referring to the evidence of those who say that liquor cannot be procured. The latter cannot testify positively—they can only express their opinion or belief, which is not evidence in the eye of the law. Those who have procured liquor as stated can and do testify positively. They know that liquor is procured at the hotels: the opposing witnesses cannot know that it is not.
