Full Text

SEMI-OFFICIAL.
From the Richmond Enquirer.
Brief but Interesting Extract.

We recommend the following to the attention of the reader. It is from a highly respectable Member of Congress to his friend in this city—Dated.

Washington, Jan. 30.

"It seems to me to be perfectly obvious that the sole enquiry we have to make, is into the least burthensome subjects of taxation: and I am persuaded that whatever regret is felt as to the necessity of making the selection, a majority will be found in Congress prepared to make the most ample provision for the requisite supplies. Indeed I have no doubt from repeated conversations, that all the taxes will be cheerfully voted, as recommended by the Secretary, except the Excise and the Stamp tax; for which, if they should not be adopted, substitutes will be found. The committee of ways and means are now engaged on the budget, attended by Mr. Gallatin; and we shall shortly have the subject under deliberation.

"The committee of foreign affairs, deeming it proper that the nation should have some intimation, as to the period, when the War shall commence, authorised the note in the Intelligencer, by which it is announced, that, the return of the Hornet is fixed for that event."
