Wild Escape On Upper Keys

Milwaukee Boys Caught Robbing Grocery Store At Tavernier

Five Milwaukee, Wisc., youths are in county jail here under $1,000 bond each following a hair-raising escapade along the upper Florida Keys in the early morning hours today.

The five, who told Justice of the Peace E. R. Lowe they had stolen a car in Milwaukee last Saturday night and reached Tavernier Tuesday night, were surprised in the act of robbing a Tavernier grocery store about 12:30 this morning.

Milton Peacock, who lives next door to the store, kept out of sight while the robbery was taking place because two of the boys stood guard with rifles.

When the act was completed and the boys were making a getaway in the car, Peacock fired several shots after them. Then he and Constable Pinder roused Highway Patrolman C. R. Reynolds and the constable and patrolman gave chase southward.

Apparently the young bandits eluded the officers and headed north. A road block had been established at Florida City and three of the boys were apprehended there on a farm tractor they had stolen when their car ran out of gas due to the tank being punctured by bullets fired earlier by Peacock. The other two were picked up in the car where they had remained when their companions left them to go after gasoline in Homestead on the tractor.

Patrolman Reynolds was hurt accidentally. As he removed stolen property from the car one of the rifles went off sending a bullet into his foot.
