ASBURY PARK, July 10.—James A. Bradley, the founder of Asbury Park, was arrested yesterday on complaint of Joseph O. Patterson, the freight agent at the place, on a charge of criminal libel. The arrest was made on a warrant issued by Justice Greco, of Ocean Beach. The alleged libel was printed in Tuesday's issue of the Daily Journal, over the signature of the editor of the Angler. Mr. Bradley is the editor of the latter paper, which is published in the interest of the fishing pier. Patterson takes exception to that portion of the article which accused him of using language such as an ordinary tramp would be ashamed of toward Detective David H. Burd, of the Law and Order League, and threatening to throw him under the car wheels should he visit the freight station. Patterson's hatred of Burd grew out of a publication in the Angler, in which it was intimated that the freight station had been turned into a beer vault. Founder Bradley was held in $500 in his own recognizance to appear for hearing on Wednesday next. During the hearing Mr. Bradley protested against the importation of a justice from a foreign town while there were plenty of legal officers in the park. Patterson's counsel retorted that the justices of Asbury Park were afraid of the defendant and would not have entertained a complaint had one been made. The arrest caused considerable excitement. Mr. Bradley does not deny the authorship of the alleged libelous articles, but says he is determined to break up the vending of beer about the park.
