The siege of Gibraltar is certainly carrying on now with so much vigor by the Spaniards, that the fortress must be in considerable danger if a blockade by the combined fleets is permitted to co-operate in favor of the assault from the Spanish lines.
When the last accounts came off from Gibraltar, several shells and bombs had passed through the Governor's house: in consequence of which, the garrison united in a request that he would relinquish it for the present; to which Gen. Elliot replied, he would not leave it so long as a room was left standing.
Extract of a letter from on board one of his Majesty's ships, Gibraltar-Bay, June 29.
Yesterday the General ordered a new battery to be opened upon the Spaniards, to try a scheme to set their camp on fire, and blow up their grand magazine. The plan is likely to succeed, as they threw some shells for the trial a great way beyond, and some very near the above magazine. New mortars and guns are to be placed there, the General's intention being to keep a constant fire till the enemy is entirely driven off.
We expect that the Spaniards will soon seize this place in a very little time, as there are about 10,000 men lately arrived, and encamped at Algeziras.
