A FITTING TRIBUTE.
Birthday Celebration that One Husband Prepared for His Wife.
Mr. H. A. Blair, the popular East Commerce street druggist, paid his charming wife a fitting tribute of the esteem and love in which he holds her, by preparing for her a grand celebration of the anniversary of her birthday. Friends to the number of nearly 100 were invited and in response none failed to be present. Such a gala scene as the Blair residence and grounds presented last night, has seldom been witnessed in San Antonio domestic circles. The residence was ablaze with light and the grounds, shaded in perfect canopy by spreading mulberry trees, were gorgeously bedecked with vari-colored oriental lanterns, festooned so artistically as to form various geometrical figures. The smooth earthen floor of the yard had been carefully laid in sawdust, and in the centre for the dancers, spacious tarpaulins were stretched. The excellent musicians of Artzt's string band occupied a position on the extreme right, the refreshments were deposited under a large awning, and the corps of youthful waiters were marshalled in ready call and did excellent service during the evening in attending to the every wish of the guests. Mrs. Blair herself was everywhere and her bright smile and winning, homely hospitality manifested itself in various ways, always devising for the comfort and pleasure of the guests, with untiring zeal. So much electrical force and personal magnetism is seldom seen in one of Eve's daughters, and when seen is never used to such good purpose as did the fair hostess. A fine supper was served at 12 o'clock and after the guests arose a hearty vote of thanks was unanimously given by them to Mr. and Mrs. Blair for their entertainment throughout the evening. Several short speeches, quite apropos, were made by the gentlemen, remarkable among which was Col. Hadley's short, but perfectly authoritative discourse upon the subject of matrimony. The hour was 3 o'clock this morning when all the guests departed, Mrs. Blair received quite a bewildering quantity of costly and beautiful presents from her husband and their guests and many who could not attend in person sent as their representative some beautiful remembrance.
