Dies While Driving To Executive Mansion

WASHINGTON (ANP)-- John E. Boardly, a veteran White House employee, died at the wheel of his automobile last Tuesday morning while enroute to the Executive Mansion where he has been employed for the past 42 years.

The 64-year-old head messenger was not more than four blocks from his home when he apparently was stricken by a heart attack and collapsed over the wheel of the automobile he was driving. His car run wild for more than a block, striking two automobiles before hitting a building.

His daughter Ida Mae, age 30, who was riding in the back seat of the car was not hurt.

When news of Boardley's death reached the White House, President Truman expressed his regret as did other officials there.

Boardley was held in the highest esteem by the White House staff where he has handled much confidential material during his tenure there under the administration of eight different Presidents.

He traveled with President Truman on each of his swings through the West since 1948 and was in charge of mimeographing and distributing his speeches to members of the press. Regardless of how many off-the-cuff speeches the President made, or how often he made them, copies of the speeches would always be available to newspapermen within 10 minutes after they were delivered.

Boardley also traveled with President Roosevelt during the later part of his reign at the White House.

He was born at Ivory Post office, Maryland, and began his employment at the White House in 1908 as a janitor, working his way up as a messenger and clerk and in 1943 was promoted to the post he last held as head messenger.

He is survived by his widow, Ida, and two daughters, Ida Mae and Sarah Elizabeth, both are government employees.
